Competitiveness of Livestock Sub-Sector in West Sumatera, Indonesia

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that influence and determine the competitiveness of animal husbandry business in West Sumatra and identify the relative comparison of the level of competitiveness of animal husbandry business in several regencies/cities in West Sumatra. To analyze the competitiveness status of livestock business in West Sumatra the study used Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method while the competitiveness variable was determined by using the Diamond Porter variable. The results of the study showed that natural and human resources, infrastructure and technology play a significant role in increasing the competitiveness of farming in West Sumatra with a weight of 0.304 followed by a demand factor for livestock commodities with a weight of 0.26, which in turn is followed by the presence factor of the role of government and opportunity with a weight of 0.25, followed by industry competition factor with a weight of 0.239 and most recently, an industry cluster with a weight of 0.203. Regions that have better competitiveness in West Sumatra are Padang Pariaman Regency and Pariaman City with a weight of 0.27.
